Using the Unwrap Operation
The Unwrap operation is used to create a texture that can be painted in a paint program and applied to an object. This operation can only be used with a selection of faces as in the example above. If there is a current texture in the material palette the unwrap will not create a new texture, but will append to the current texture. This is useful when you want to unwrap an object onto a single texture as is often required when creating textures for games. The left panel is the wrapping preview. A temporary texture is applied to the wrap so that you can ensure that the texture will not be distorted when it is applied. The right panel can be used to adjust the texture map coordinates. Each green handle corresponds to the mapping position of a point. These handles can be moved to adjust the point's texture map coordinates. This is useful for reducing the distortion that often occurs with the standard spherical, cylindrical and flat wrapping methods. Click

A temporary texture will be applied to the object as a placeholder for your
texture. When you have painted your texture, select it with the material
